Women, myth & landscape
This series of artworks is an exploration of women and myth in the landscape. I have looked at the history of how mythical women have been depicted and visually represented in the arts, especially how the female body is either immersed in the natural world from water to green fields or mountains. I am referencing three works by the artist Gustav Klimt where the female form seems submissive yet displays strength and often her naked body is entwined with her surroundings.
I have broken down these elements. The primary colours of red, yellow and blue which are often traditionally used in icon painting, I have used as a starting point. What is left is no longer a direct portrayal, but a fractured memory of what once was.
I want to celebrate the strength and determination of women, no longer portrayed in a classically mythical tale, but as a dynamic energy force of light and vigour.
